The number that actually matters is twenty, as in twenty years, the anniversary Beyond Store in Jyvaskyla, Finland is marking with the first Nike SB collaboration ever built by a Nordic retailer.

This is not a nostalgia drop. Beyond built the shoe around one specific 1939 building, and the case buried in the leather is that vert skating has a European architect sitting in its family tree that nobody credits.

Beyond sold the Dunk High exclusively out of its Jyvaskyla store on July 8, 2026, then opened it at the Helsinki location on July 11. The wider release, the one most people will actually pull a pair from, lands July 25 at Nike SB accounts and July 28 on SNKRS for $140.

Nike SB has run this staggered release before, most recently on the $120 Air Force 1 rebuild that hit skate shops before it reached SNKRS, and the pattern rewards shops that actually carry the SB account over resale bots camped on an app. Beyond gets two full weeks of exclusivity before the rest of the world can buy in, which is the real prize for a shop hitting twenty years in business.

Alvar Aalto Poured the First Freeform Pool

Alvar Aalto designed a freeform swimming pool at Villa Mairea in Finland in 1939, abandoning the rectangular pool shape standard at the time for curved, kidney like edges. That pool is the reason "Lines That Never End," the collaboration's title, is stitched onto the insole alongside sketches of its outline.

American vert skating's actual origin story is a California drought. Teenagers in the mid 1970s climbed neighbors' fences and rode empty, kidney shaped backyard pools because there was no water left to fill them, years before anyone built a skatepark on purpose. Aalto's pool predates that by roughly three and a half decades and was never built with a skateboard in mind, it was a private residential commission. Beyond is drawing a line between the two anyway, and the shoe is the argument, an architecture flex wearing a skate shoe's body.

$140 Buys Birch, Brick, and a Patent Blue Heel

The Beyond Dunk High retails for $140 in a white upper with a cream, birch toned Swoosh that nods to Aalto's furniture designs. Brick red covers the outsole as a reference to Aalto's preferred building material, and a blue patent leather panel at the heel points to the glazed ceramic tile Aalto used across his best known sites.

It is Nike SB's second Finnish adjacent flex for the archive heads this year. The brand also sent five team riders to Detroit for the Tennis Classic revival, pairing hall of fame credibility with a silhouette pulled from 2005. Beyond's Dunk reaches back to 1939 instead, further than Nike SB has gone for any retailer exclusive to date, and the design reads like a furniture catalog translated into leather rather than a generic colorway exercise.

Beyond Is Twenty. Nordic Nike SB Never Existed Before This.

Beyond Store has operated in Jyvaskyla for twenty years, and this Dunk High is the first Nike SB shoe built with a Nordic retailer. No skate shop from Finland, Sweden, Norway, or Denmark has landed this kind of deal before Beyond did.

Skeptics have a fair point here. The Dunk High's shape has not changed since 2005, and tying it to a dead architect's swimming pool is a marketing story, not an engineering one. Nike SB has told versions of this same origin tale before, on the Rassvet Tennis Classic, on the Supreme Air Max CB 94, on nearly every retailer exclusive that needed a reason to exist beyond looking good on a wall.

But the twenty year run and the Nordic first are real, and $140 for a shoe with actual research behind the colorway beats another blank canvas collab with a press release bolted on after the fact. Expect Beyond's next anniversary shoe, whenever that lands, to keep hunting Finnish reference points instead of recycling someone else's country's history. The two week head start in Jyvaskyla and Helsinki also sets a template other regional skate shops chasing their own SB account will study closely before pitching Nike their own local landmark.
