ANDREW GARFIELD'S SAM ALTMAN PROMISES COUNTRIES WILL FALL

Andrew Garfield walks past a locked room stocked with guns behind glass, sits down at his desk, and tells the camera exactly how this ends. "We opened Pandora's box together," he says, in character as Sam Altman. "Countries will fall. Industries are gonna collapse and we get to be the ones to shepherd people into this new world." Neon posted that teaser on September 8, the first footage from Luca Guadagnino's Artificial, and it plays less like a tech biopic than a horror movie where the villain already won.

That is the pitch Neon is selling. Not an origin story, but a horror trailer built entirely from Altman's own promises, four months after the studio that financed the film decided it could not survive releasing it.

Garfield stars as the OpenAI cofounder in a film built around the five days in November 2023 when Altman was fired by his own board and reinstated before the week was out. Monica Barbaro plays Mira Murati, the former OpenAI chief technology officer who ran the company during the gap. Yura Borisov, fresh off Anora, plays former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, whose vote helped trigger the firing. Mark Rylance plays Geoffrey Hinton, the Nobel laureate who has spent two years warning about the technology Altman's company builds. Simon Rich, the former Saturday Night Live writer, wrote the script.

Amazon Financed This Movie, Then Refused to Release It

Amazon MGM Studios developed and paid for Artificial, then walked away from distributing its own finished film. The exit landed in the same window Amazon signed a fifty billion dollar cloud computing and investment deal with OpenAI, the company the movie is about. Neon, the distributor behind Parasite and Anora, bought the abandoned film for forty million dollars instead of letting it sit on a shelf. A studio financing a film about a company, then dropping it once that company becomes a business partner, is its own subplot, and Neon was the only distributor willing to release both.

The Film Opens Small on Christmas, Then Everywhere in January

Artificial premieres at the New York Film Festival on October 5, then opens in limited theaters on December 25 before expanding wide in January 2027. The staggered release is a qualifying run, the pattern studios use to get a film in front of Oscar voters before the calendar year closes, without betting a wide opening weekend on a subject this contested. Netflix, A24 and Focus Features reportedly passed on the finished cut before Amazon MGM dropped it entirely. Guadagnino cast Garfield twice this year, first in After the Hunt, a campus thriller about a professor accused of assault, then in Artificial, a boardroom thriller about the same instinct to protect power at any cost. Neon took the bet none of the other distributors would.

Three FO Stories Already Carried His Name This Summer

Sam Altman's OpenAI has already turned up in this outlet's coverage three times before this trailer existed: a 475 dollar hoodie resale in July, a humanoid robot demo backed by his company's investment that month, and the 40 million dollar sale of this film two months ago. A studio abandoning a finished movie over a cloud computing contract is a stranger sentence than anything in Rich's script, and Neon chose to make it the header on opening day.

Call this one early for the Oscar conversation and cold at the box office. A Christmas Day limited run built for guild ballots, not audiences, expanding wide only once the qualifying window has already done its job. Three years after OpenAI's board fired Altman and rehired him inside a week, he is getting the biopic treatment from the one distributor willing to release it, arriving in the December his company's cloud deal made the studio that shot it walk away.
