adidas Takes Its Stan Smith Residency to Shanghai

adidas Originals has opened a Stan Smith Residency in Shanghai, four months after the first one in Paris, and the invitation line is short: "Green has never looked so good." The Shanghai residency is the second city in a run of Stan Smith events that adidas is staging ahead of a fuller relaunch of the shoe.

The first Stan Smith Residency ran on June 26 and 27, 2026, when adidas Originals and TTGT Studio took over a multi floor home in Paris and treated the shoe as a canvas. Yung Lean built a live spray painting installation in one room, James Blake presented new and older work in an intimate session, and an archive exhibition drawn from adidas' collection in Herzogenaurach showed selected models alongside unreleased Stan Smith iterations.

Shanghai arrives with the same name and a different setting. The announcement says "Welcome to the STAN SMITH RESIDENCY in Shanghai" and carries a set of photographs and a short video, but it names no venue, no dates and no program. Until adidas publishes those, the Paris version is the only template, and it was built from art, performance and archive.

Shanghai Staged the Stan Smith's Last Return in 2013

The city has hosted the shoe's comeback before. SneakerNews covered "The Stan Smith: Return of the Classic," an adidas Originals exhibition at Dahood Shanghai, in December 2013, and reported that more than 40 million pairs of the Stan Smith had sold by then. Thirteen years later, adidas is back in Shanghai with a residency instead of a gallery show.

That timeline is the argument for reading Shanghai as a statement and not a stop on a tour. adidas chose Shanghai for the shoe's 2013 return and for this residency, and it did so in a season when Shanghai is drawing other Western brands: NikeSKIMS opened a pop up on West Nanjing Road on September 29, its first physical space in mainland China, running through February 2027.

Green Is the Brief

The tagline claims one color, and adidas has been building toward it since spring. On June 6, 2026, the brand launched its five shoe Objects of Legacy pack worldwide in a matching white and green colorway across the Powerphase, Tangum, SC Premiere, Stan Smith 80s and BW Army. Extra Butter later limited the Stan Smith 80s in that pack to its Lower East Side store, which made the Stan Smith the hardest piece of that pack to find. The store has history with the brand: Extra Butter built a full Consortium SC Premiere Cableknit collaboration with adidas in 2020, so the one store restriction reads as a retailer with history getting first claim on the pack's best pair.

White leather with green accents is the Stan Smith's best known colorway, so a campaign that says green looks better than ever is selling the shoe in its home palette. The residency copy does not mention a new model, and a color claim with no product attached suggests that the event is about restating the silhouette before a launch date arrives.

Gulden Put the Date at Late 2026

CEO Bjørn Gulden has said the Stan Smith is next in adidas' rotation of hero silhouettes, with a fuller relaunch expected from late 2026 into early 2027. adidas Originals then released a Stan Smith photo series shot on film by Thibaut Grevet, who also directed the brand's Superstar campaign, on August 19.

Set in order, the sequence reads as a plan: a pack in white and green on June 6, a Paris residency on June 26 and 27, a film series on August 19 and a Shanghai residency in October. Each step is a different medium aimed at a different audience, and each one carries the Stan Smith name.

The counterpoint is that the evidence for a relaunch is still adidas' own statements. No product, price or release date has appeared with the Shanghai announcement, and the Paris residency showed unreleased iterations rather than shipping them. Events can run for months before a shoe appears, and the Shanghai announcement does not say what, if anything, will be on sale.

If Gulden's timetable holds, the fuller relaunch falls between late 2026 and early 2027, and Shanghai is the second residency city on the way there.
