Thundercat Announces Distracted Featuring an Unreleased Mac Miller Collab. Distracted features a previously unreleased collaboration with the dearly departed Ma.
Key Points
- Distracted features a previously unreleased collaboration with the dearly departed Mac Miller on track 'She Knows Too Much'
- The album was primarily created with superproducer Greg Kurstin, known for work with Adele, Paul McCartney, Sia, Beyoncé, and Beck
- Thundercat previously revealed he recorded a full album with Mac Miller but said 'everything isn't meant to be put out'
Thundercat just dropped the bass on 2026. Six years to the date of his last LP, Thundercat will release his fifth studio album, Distracted, coming out April 3rd via Brainfeeder.
## The Mac Miller Vault Opens
The new album features contributions from A$AP Rocky, WILLOW, Tame Impala, Channel Tres, Lil Yachty and a previously unreleased collaboration with the dearly departed Mac Miller. The track, titled 'She Knows Too Much (feat. Mac Miller)', sits as track three on the 15 song record.
The track is a posthumous recording made during Mac Miller's lifetime with Thundercat, who was a close friend. This isn't the first time Thundercat has hinted at their extensive catalog together. In 2020, Thundercat revealed he recorded a full album with Mac Miller, responding to a fan tweet with 'It exist.'
But Thundercat quickly clarified: 'Everything isn't meant to be put out like that. Me and Mac worked on a lot of different things. He did as he saw fit y'all gotta relax lol.'
## Greg Kurstin's Pop Crossover Play
Distracted was primarily created in close collaboration with a new creative partner for Thundercat, the superproducer Greg Kurstin, known for his work with some of the biggest names in pop like Adele, Paul McCartney, Sia, Beyoncé, Beck and more.
This is a significant shift for Thundercat's usual production circle. Additional production comes from Flying Lotus, Kenny Beats (Kenneth Blume), and The Lemon Twigs.
'Sometimes you need to be distracted to focus in a different way,' Thundercat said. 'Just enjoy it and have fun, and just know that the struggle is real and changes shape, but just to keep pushing forward.'
## The Digital Romance Algorithm
The song's themes reflect the focus of the entire album, which, per its title, explores the often distracting nature of technology and social media. The lead single 'I Did This To Myself ft. Lil Yachty,' features additional production from longtime friend and collaborator Flying Lotus.
Lil Yachty's verse explores similar themes, harping on the frustrating realities of contemporary digital romance ('Takin' those pics in a bra shouldn't jam your schedule / We made plans twice and it's unsuccessful').
Distracted vividly captures the tension between overstimulation and introspection. Thundercat is deeply skeptical of technological 'progress,' especially the way it's narrowed our collective imagination instead of expanding it.
This isn't just another posthumous cash grab. It's Thundercat finally opening the vault on one of hip hop's most prolific creative partnerships, wrapped in his most pop forward production choices yet.
